If you were scandalized by Miley Cyrus' performance Sunday at the VMAs, get ready to have your shock codified in the English language, because this whole twerking phenomenon has gone way too far. Not only is Miley Cyrus trying to earn street cred by attempting to do the dance, but now Britain’s Oxford Dictionary has added the word. Yes, twerking is now a legitimate word.
Despite the word being in the urban lexicon for years, Oxford Dictionary didn't decide to add the word until Miley “twerked” all over Robin Thicke’s man muscle at the VMAs this past weekend.
The New York Times reports:
"Britain’s Oxford Dictionaries said the rapid-fire gyrations employed by pop starlet Miley Cyrus to bounce her way to the top of the charts had become increasingly visible in the past 12 months and would be added to its publications under the entry: “Twerk, verb.”"So now that “twerk” is part of the dictionary, when are we going to add other slang made famous by Afro-Beat "Azonto," I mean, really, what’s next? or Adding the slang term of “donk” by Ying yang Twins? to the dictionary. Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon is already crapping English Language in my country. I don’t know why i’m acting all surprised. I should have known something was up once “bootylicious” was added some years ago.
